It was a bit of a spur of the moment idea that made me breed sproodles. We had brought back, from Zimbabwe, to the UK our black labrador and maltese poodle. The black hairs all over my cream carpets inside made me swear never to have a dog that shed again. The wet and mud on our white Maltese who constantly needed washing made me swear never to have a white dog with short legs again.
We welcomed Lupin into our home one Friday afternoon when we heard she needed re-homing. I was in a very good mood and one look from her and my heart melted…white and brown shedding hair and all! Our Maltese had passed away and we had friends who advised us that Springers by the age of 3 should have a litter or be spayed as they can get an infection in their uterus that kills very quickly.
We had seen quite a few cockapoos around and thought they were adorable and Nick and I don’t have children, we love animals so I got the go ahead to have puppies.
I wanted a healthy dirt coloured dog with low shed hair and long legs – this is a Sproodle! For centuries people have been breeding dogs into different sizes and shapes to suit different work. In our 21st Century lifestyle dogs don’t have jobs anymore apart from keeping us company at home and on walks so this description fitted what I wanted perfectly.
Underneath the various sizes, shape and colours all dogs are 100% the same. They can all breed together and have exactly the same DNA as their ancestor the wolf which they all could still technically breed with too! So when people ask me what are the characteristics of the Sproodle the answer is : They are medium sized dogs who have their own personalities with brown fluffy coats.
