Cross breeds of dogs, terms F1, F1B and F2 set up to confuse the best of us! Here I explain simply what they mean.
They are terms that have become common with the breeding of doodles, sproodles, goldendoodles, cockerpoos, cavapoos, springerdoodles, labradoodles….the list is endless now as everyone crosses a Poodle with another breed. This has created a lot of very very cute fluffy dogs.
F1 – this is when an older breed like my English Springer Spaniel is crossed with a Poodle a similar size, so I use a miniature poodle – the results are always a bit of a lottery as each resulting dog has different amounts of genes from both breeds.
F1B – this is when your F1 breed is put back to a poodle for a litter. So in my case I intend to breed from Tuli my F1 sproodle who is quite small at 14kg to a poodle. I have chosen a Toy poodle who is quite tall and similar in size to her. Tuli has a poodle frame, poodle ears, but straighter hair and springer eyes with the short springer eyelash. Her legs also have the springer leap as she jumps very high. Its likely her litter will have more poodle than springer.
F2 – traditional breeders with more experience than me have warned me away from doing this. Its when you breed an F1 Sproodle with a F1 Sproodle. Apparently you can get throw backs and odd looking dogs that are either alot more Springer or alot more poodle which makes sense to me as the genes mix.
