Scottish Highland Croft and new Dornoch home

February 16, 2023

When Nick bought the Scottish Highland croft in 2021 we knew the old house was in a terrible state of repair. However, we had successfully finished our Seaview home and felt confident we could take on another project. We used my inheritance to buy the croft , you can only buy them with cash. In November 2022 I realised I needed respite from the dust, dirt, mice, mould and hundreds of jobs still left to do to make it habitable for a normal person. The original plan had been to renovate the house and then transform the old barns into a gorgeous holiday cottage.

A year in and I could see it was going to take us years of graft. When we worked on our previous house I could escape the dirt and jobs by visiting my Dad in his clean, modern, warm, immaculate flat. Here I had nowhere to go.

In a fit of pique I looked online and found a bungalow, in gorgeous Dornoch. We booked a viewing for the next day, within minutes I knew I had found my sanity project. We could quickly turn this house into a comfortable holiday home for everyone coming to Dornoch to play golf and enjoy life up here.

The new Dornoch home raised my spirits and we ordered all the furniture we needed. I could finally take all my paintings out of their wrappings and hang them on walls. Our books came out of boxes and onto shelves. The bubble wrap was taken off the photos and the house began to quickly feel like a much loved home. The vintage furniture we had I sanded and painted, foot stools were re-covered and curtains made from a bolt of fabric I had stored. It has been a joyous fast process and we hope to have the home ready for guests in April 2023 once the license from the Highland Council has been processed.

In the meantime everytime I drive up to 7, Fraser Avenue, Dornoch I smile. I smile as I walk into town and onto the stunning beach. I think it has made me happy because its everything the croft isn’t and vice versa, the best of both worlds. You can book to come up and stay via:  https://airbnb.com/h/dornochholidayhome
